Clinical trials are the last research step in the development of new treatments. They enable researchers to test and evaluate the effects of these new treatments on human health. They also give us a better understanding of type 1 diabetes, its causes and its complications.
Many clinical trials are used to test out new drugs and new devices, but they can also assess other interventions like structured education or talking therapies.
Why get involved?
Thanks to research, we have things like smart pens, continuous glucose monitors, insulin pumps, and closed loop systems. Every little innovation has a massive impact on people living with type one diabetes – Research makes that possible.

Taking Part in Research & Clinical Trials
Each clinical trial has specific criteria for participation. This means that you will not be able to take part in every single trial, so to find out if there are clinical trials near you that you may be eligible for click on the type 1 diabetes trial finder tool.
There are other ways to take part in research. Students and researchers regularly contact Breakthrough T1D asking for help recruiting to their research studies. By taking part, you can help researchers make progress to improve lives, find cures and better care for type 1 diabetes. Breakthrough T1D lists these opportunities on its “Take part in research” page.
If you are considering taking part in clinical trials then consult with your diabetes team so that they are aware and can help you before going ahead.
