Web Accessibility Statement

DigiBete fully complies with WCAG 2.2 AA level requirements (Web Content Accessibility Guidelines). We always follow the 6 key principles under the human-centred design process conforming to the ISO 9241-210 standards (International Standard for Human-Centered Design) when creating new technologies which include – discovery, then alpha and beta phases before a full go-live is enabled.

The DigiBete platform utilises the latest ReachDeck Technology (ref. https://www.texthelp.com/en-gb/products/reachdeck/) to improve accessibility and readability of our content. This technology supports our web visitors to engage with our online content in a way that suits their needs. Features include text-to-speech, reading and translation support in up to 99 languages.

Refer to our helpful guides below if you need more information on using ReachDeck.

ReachDeck HelpGuide PDF Resource

Here is a helpful PDF resource for using the ReachDeck Tool.

During the build of both the platform and app a detailed analysis of our user demographics was clearly defined, and this process continues to be an integral part of our product development, in partnership work with the National CYP Diabetes Network and through the use of the National Paediatric Data Audit.  In addition, ethnographic and co-design research informed the early stages of our work. Ongoing user co-design and real-world evaluation and feedback from across the 172 clinics we serve, inform our work to support users’ evolving needs.

All new features and resources for our app and platform undergo a rigorous co-design and approval cycle (ref. Clinical Risk Management Plan) where new resources and products are tested with users. Research conducted includes user testing, through our DigiBete Champions programme and through in-app surveys, remote testing, popup questionnaires on the clinic portal and PEN testing.

Throughout the evaluation of early versions and pre-release versions, changes were made to the DigiBete app to reflect user feedback and an assessment for usability and accessibility was undertaken. We also have a DigiBete bug fix and change log to support ongoing feedback and are responsive to the feedback on requirements from the Diabetes Team at the NHS Diabetes Programme.

We use a Trello board to prioritise both accessibility and general updates and enhancements from user feedback and this feeds into our development pathway.

The platforms we use for the DigiBete app are Native iOS or Android app and are available to 94% of the population of mobile phone users.

DigiBete is now routinely including captions in all its film content and are in the process of updating previous content with captions.  DigiBete has also commissioned British Sign Language for all essential films and are have converted the essential films into up to 12 different languages as per the image. In addition, we are producing transcripts for each of the essential care films that can then be converted into 99 languages using ReachDeck software housed on the site.

According to the published information here:

https://www.statista.com/statistics/956297/ownership-of-smartphones-uk/

The DigiBete app is available to 95% of our patients and families, see the statistics below –

Of all adults aged 16+, 87% have a smartphone.

Of all 16–24-year-olds, 99% have a smartphone.

In terms of the DigiBete app specifically, there will be some of the above who are running unsupported OS versions, but on the last review, this was less than 5% of devices in the UK.
